Sports drinks, energy drinks, and soda hit teeth twice — sugar and acid. Learn to read a label, count sugar moments, and make the call yourself.

You’re the one holding the two dollars at the vending machine now. So here’s what’s actually happening to your teeth when you make that call.
Sugary drinks hit twice
Most people know about the sugar. Fewer know there are two separate risks.
Risk one — the sugar. Plaque bacteria metabolize it and release acid that attacks enamel. Standard cavity chain.
Risk two — the drink’s own acid. Sodas, sports drinks, and energy drinks are acidic before a single bacterium gets involved. Frequent consumption of acidic food and beverages is associated with increased erosive tooth wear — enamel worn away directly.
That second risk is why a sugar-free soda or energy drink is not automatically a tooth-safe choice. Removing the sugar removes one risk, not both.
Read the label
Added sugars have a lot of names: anything ending in -ose (sucrose, glucose, fructose, dextrose), plus syrups, nectars, and juice concentrates. Sucrose is the most cavity-causing of the sugars.
Two label habits worth building:
- Find the added-sugars line — not just total sugars.
- Check servings per container. A bottle you drink in one sitting is often labeled as two or three servings, which quietly multiplies every number.
Even 100% juice is high in sugar. It’s not a scam — it’s just not a free pass.
The frequency multiplier
Here’s the leverage point most people miss. One drink with lunch is a single acid exposure. The same bottle sipped across three class periods is exposure after exposure after exposure, restarting the attack each time. Researchers think this frequency may predict cavity risk even better than the total amount of sugar consumed.
Practical translation: finish it, don’t nurse it — and make water the default between meals. Water helps wash food away and weakens acids.

So run the process on a real choice: name your options, predict what each one does to your teeth, pick one, and say what would make a better option available next time. That is the same decision-making you would use for any health question.
Nobody’s confiscating your drink. But you now know things most adults don’t: sugar-free still means acidic, servings-per-container hides the real number, and how often beats how much.

Materials
- Empty drink containers with labels — soda, sports drink, energy drink, flavored water, 100% juice, milk
- A list of alternate names for added sugar (syrups, anything ending in -ose, concentrates)
- Chart paper for the decision-making walkthrough
- Printed pre/post knowledge checks from this packet (one per student, used twice)
Procedure
- Pre-check (5 min): hand out the paper knowledge check, read each question aloud, and collect it. Keep the stack — you will compare it with the post-check.
- Hook (4 min): line up the containers and have students rank them from best to worst for teeth. Record the class ranking before any teaching — you will revisit it at the end.
- Two risks, not one (6 min): teach the double hit. Sugar feeds plaque bacteria that produce acid; separately, the drink's own acidity is associated with erosive tooth wear. A zero-sugar acidic drink still carries the second risk.
- Label reading (7 min): students find added sugars on each label and hunt alternate names. Compare serving size to how much people actually drink at once.
- Frequency math (4 min): one drink at lunch versus the same bottle sipped across three class periods — students diagram the acid-attack timeline for each.
- Decision walkthrough (3 min): use a real scenario (after practice, vending machine, two dollars). Name the options, predict outcomes, choose, and state what would make a different choice better.
- Wrap-up (1 min): revisit the opening ranking and revise it as a class.
- Post-check (5 min): hand out the same knowledge check again. Compare class totals with the pre-check to see the learning — and celebrate it.

Sports drinks, energy drinks, and soda hit teeth twice: the sugar feeds acid-producing bacteria, and the drinks are acidic themselves — frequent acidic drinks are associated with erosive enamel wear, even sugar-free ones. What matters most is how often, not just how much: a drink finished at a meal is easier on teeth than the same bottle sipped for hours. Water is the default between meals.

Read one label together this week — a drink your teen actually buys. Find the added sugars line, the serving size, and how many servings are in the bottle. No verdict needed; the number usually makes its own argument.
