Fluoride & Sealants: The Evidence
Two proven defenses and a skill that outlasts them both — how to tell a trustworthy health source from a confident stranger online.

You already know what fluoride and sealants do. This lesson is about something more durable: how anyone knows that, and how you’ll evaluate the next health claim you meet.
The mechanisms, one more time
Fluoride makes enamel more resistant to acid and drives remineralization, putting minerals back into enamel that acid has weakened. It reaches your teeth through toothpaste, most community water supplies, and treatments at the dental office.
Sealants work physically: a coating flowed into the pits and fissures of molar chewing surfaces, sealing off the grooves where bristles can’t reach. The ADA’s Council on Scientific Affairs — jointly with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry — recommends placing sealants on the primary and permanent molars of children and adolescents.
Where a recommendation comes from
That recommendation didn’t come from one dentist’s hunch. It came from a clinical practice guideline: a group of experts systematically reviewing many studies and publishing what the combined evidence supports.
Two things follow, and both are worth internalizing:
- A guideline is stronger evidence than an anecdote. “It worked for my cousin” is one data point with no controls.
- Guidelines can change when evidence changes — and that’s a sign the system is working, not that “they keep flip-flopping.”
Four questions for any health claim
You will meet health claims for the rest of your life, most of them online, many of them confident and wrong. Run these:
- Who wrote it? A professional organization, a researcher, an anonymous account, or a brand?
- What evidence is offered? A review of studies, a single study, or a personal story?
- Who benefits if you believe it? Someone selling a product has a stake in your conclusion.
- How current is it? Health guidance has dates for a reason.
When two sources conflict, ask which one is summarizing a body of research and which one is a single voice — and check whether either is selling something.
Where to look first
For dental questions: the ADA (ada.org and MouthHealthy), the AAPD, and the American Academy of Pediatrics publish public-facing, evidence-based guidance. Start there, then bring what you find to your dentist or hygienist and ask what it means for your mouth.

- Printouts or screenshots of three health claims — one from a professional organization, one from a product ad, one from a social post
- A source-evaluation checklist — who wrote it, what evidence, who benefits, when published
- Devices for looking up a claim, if available
- Printed pre/post knowledge checks from this packet (one per student, used twice)
Procedure
- Pre-check (5 min): hand out the paper knowledge check, read each question aloud, and collect it. Keep the stack — you will compare it with the post-check.
- Mechanisms recap (6 min): fluoride strengthens enamel and drives remineralization; sealants physically fill the pits and fissures of molars. Note that the ADA, jointly with the AAPD, recommends sealants on the primary and permanent molars of children and adolescents — that recommendation came from an evidence review, not an opinion.
- Where guidance comes from (5 min): explain that professional organizations publish recommendations after reviewing many studies, and that a recommendation can change if the evidence changes. That is a feature, not a flaw.
- Source triage (8 min): in small groups, students evaluate the three sample claims with the checklist — who wrote it, what evidence backs it, who profits, how current is it. Groups report which they would trust and why.
- Handling disagreement (4 min): what do you do when two sources conflict? Check whether one is a professional body summarizing many studies and the other is a single voice; check whether either is selling something.
- Wrap-up (2 min): name one place you would go first for a dental health question, and why.
- Post-check (5 min): hand out the same knowledge check again. Compare class totals with the pre-check to see the learning — and celebrate it.

Tonight's healthy habit
Fluoride and sealants are among the most studied preventive measures in dentistry — the ADA, together with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, recommends sealants on children's and adolescents' molars based on an evidence review. This lesson also teaches source evaluation: who wrote a claim, what evidence supports it, and who profits from you believing it. That skill will outlast every specific fact in this curriculum.

Next time either of you sees a health claim online, run the four questions together: Who wrote it? What evidence? Who benefits? How current? Do it with a dental claim first, then try it on something else entirely — that is when the skill transfers.
