Enamel Defense: Fluoride & Sealants
Two defenses, two different jobs — fluoride rebuilds enamel from the mineral level up, while sealants physically block the grooves where brushes can't reach.

You already know how cavities form. Now meet the two defenses dentists actually use — and notice that they work in completely different ways.
Defense one: fluoride (the chemical one)
Fluoride is a natural mineral, and it does two things at once:
- It makes the surface of enamel stronger and more resistant to acid attacks.
- It helps put minerals back into enamel that acid has already weakened — remineralization, the rescue you learned about in the cavity chain.
Where do you get it? Fluoride toothpaste twice a day, community tap water in most places, and treatments at the dentist — a gel, foam, or paint-on varnish. It works everywhere in your mouth, every day, at the level of minerals too small to see.
Defense two: sealants (the physical one)
Run a toothbrush over a walnut. The bristles skim the top but never reach the bottom of the deepest grooves — and your molars have grooves exactly like that. Food and bacteria settle in them where no brush can follow.
A sealant solves that physically: a thin coating flowed into the pits and grooves and hardened in place, so nothing can settle there. The ADA recommends sealants on children’s molars, and the best moment is soon after a molar arrives — first molars around age six, second molars around twelve.
Why both?
Because they cover different weaknesses. Fluoride strengthens the whole tooth surface but can’t fill a groove. A sealant blocks a groove but does nothing for the rest of the tooth. And neither one replaces brushing and flossing — they’re the extra armor on top of the routine.

Materials
- A walnut, a LEGO brick, or a molar model — something with deep grooves
- A toothbrush, to test whether bristles reach the bottom of those grooves
- Clear nail polish or glue and a rough surface, to model a sealant coating — optional demo
- Printed pre/post knowledge checks from this packet (one per student, used twice)
Procedure
- Pre-check (5 min): hand out the paper knowledge check, read each question aloud, and collect it. Keep the stack — you will compare it with the post-check.
- Groove test (5 min): pass around the grooved object with a toothbrush. Can the bristles reach the bottom of the deepest groove? Students discover the physical problem sealants solve.
- Defense one — fluoride (6 min): review remineralization from the cavity chain — fluoride puts minerals back into enamel weakened by acid and makes the surface more resistant. Map its sources: toothpaste, community water, dentist-applied gel/foam/varnish.
- Defense two — sealants (5 min): a thin coating flowed into the pits and grooves of molars, sealing them so bacteria and food cannot settle there. First molars arrive around age six, second molars around twelve — sealants go on when the tooth is new.
- Compare (3 min): chart it — fluoride works chemically, everywhere, every day; sealants work physically, on specific chewing surfaces. Neither replaces brushing.
- Wrap-up (1 min): both defenses, plus the routine — that is the full prevention stack.
- Post-check (5 min): hand out the same knowledge check again. Compare class totals with the pre-check to see the learning — and celebrate it.

Try it tonight
Ask your dentist at the next visit: 'Do my molars have sealants, and do they still look intact?' Sealants can wear over time, so checking is part of the routine. Have your child ask the question themselves.
